Holy smokes, it's that time again. San Diego’s ultimate annual geek-fest, when fanboys and fangirls descend on our fair city for a four-day whirlwind, aka Comic-Con, has arrived. Caped crusaders and villains alike need to eat, so say "kapow!" to less than stellar food choices offered at the 'Con, escape the costumed craziness and refuel at one of these awesome eateries within walking distance of the Convention Center. From speedy take-outs, to themed cocktails (not to mention something called Death Star Disco), there’s something to suit the taste buds, and price points, of the most devoted pop culture enthusiast or sci-fi movie buff.

For his Comic-Con debut Chef Chad White has created a special ‘superhero power bar’ for the Lunch Rush Menu. Made withcarnitas, papas, escabeche, ash salsa, guacamole and chicharron, “The Gotham Burrito” will be available during Comic-Con for $12, but badge holders can snap one up for a tidy $10.‘Con goers can also enjoy refueling on regular lunch specials including Street Dogs, a Carne Asada Bowl, or Roasted Borrego for $15 (including a Montejo Cerveza, or non-alcoholic beverage of their choosing) just a 10 minute stroll from the Convention Center.

In a nod to the TV show Limitless, this colorful and quirky café will be pouring unlimited free coffee to keep conference goers sufficiently caffeinated (and using 100% brainpower) throughout the festivities. Their special edition “Popeye’s Plate” breakfast ($12.95), which includes muscle-bulging spinach scrambled with eggs, griddled potatoes, whole-wheat toast and a cup of plain yogurt, should also help fuel the tanks prior to a full day cruising around the Convention Center. A life-sized figure of Colonel Sanders will be keeping a watchful eye over proceedings in the dining room, where a wide variety of waffles (pumpkin is local favorite), breakfast dishes, plus all the usual lunch menu suspects can be ordered to eat in or take away.

This new Gaslamp eatery, offering a fresh take on Asian-inspired food, is celebrating its first Comic-Con with a special lunch menu featuring a Grab-N-Go bento box filled with shoyu chicken, macaroni salad, kale short rib and a bottle of water, all for $11.95. Their 'Con promotions also include Trekkie Thursday, when anyone dining in costume gets 15% off, and late night 9 to 11 p.m. happy hours ($6 apps, $3 drafts) in the bar on Friday and Saturday.

With another handy bike station by the front door, you can sit back and enjoy working your way through a current pour list that includes a Bravo IIPA with Green Tea (cask), a Mission Blonde flagship beer, cocktails on tap and a Raspberry Wheat seasonal offering. Cocktails, including Don’t Cross Streams, Proton Pack and The Slimer-Rita ($7-9) will be poured at the Ghostbusters Party on Friday night (7 p.m. until late), when the original Ecto-1 car will be parked outside for some serious selfie-opps. Put on your best Stormtrooper outfit and party with the alliance at the Death Star Disco on Saturday, when Star Wars-inspired drinks (Naboo Nectar, Jedi Mind Trick), and regular dishes will be served until late. And while they might be sitting out this year’s festivities, you can still channel your inner Ironman at the Marvel Brunch on Sunday (8 a.m. – 1 p.m.) where the usual fare mid-morning fare will be served.

Don’t worry, Jsix will be offering a variety of cocktails inspired by past and present movie and comic book favorites –– so pull up in the lounge and enjoy some of lead bartender Chris Burkett’s creations instead. The Scotch-based Darth Monkey is made with Monkey Shoulder, Lustau East India Sherry, Carpano Antica Vermouth and Carpano Dry, while Thyme Lord (an island-style Dr. Who tribute of sorts) comprises Mt. Gay Black Barrel Rum, fresh pineapple juice, fresh orange juice, cream of coconut and a Demerara float on top. Or you could try The Ant Man, sardonically served in an empty glass with a note reading, “no one cares unfortunately.”

Comic-Con specials like the To-Go Lunch (sandwich, chips and soda for $5.50), served from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., should get you back to the Indigo Ballroom in time for your next panel. The SyFy channel will once again be transforming Maryjane’s diner into the ultimate destination for fans of space opera "The Expanse". Serving a selection of salads, burgers, street tacos, and signature entrees, "The Expanse" restaurant will be open to the public daily from 6:30 a.m. - 9 p.m. and until 3 a.m. on Saturday (first come, first served). While acclaimed Japanese hot spot Nobu, also conveniently located across from the Convention Center, will be offering extended hours and a special menu during Comic-Con available between 11:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m., Thursday through Saturday.

The Bitter Yoda ($12), featuring Remy V. Midori, Amere Sauvage, Fresh Pineapple and Key Lime and garnished with sanding sugar, cascade hops and honeydew, offers a sophisticated, botanical twist on the classic Melonball. Add a little luxe to your Comic-Con must-do list this this year with a visit to geek gathering’s historic home and sip a couple of these at the bar, preferably in costume.
