Where Chefs Eat With BO-beau's Katherine Humphus

View as Map

Welcome to another installment of our new Eater Guides feature, Where Chefs Eat. We want to know where the men and women of San Diego restaurants go to feed on their all-too-rare days off. Where do they choose to spend their hard-earned pay and what do they crave?

humphus.jpgBO-beau Kitchen + Bar's chef Katherine Humphus, who was recently named head of the Cohn's BO-beau kitchen + rooftap in Long Beach is a San Diego native who trained in Paris, earning Le Grand Diplome in cuisine and pastry from Le Cordon Bleu. The executive chef has also logged time at Wylie Dufresne's WD-50 in Manhattan and The French Laundry with Thomas Keller.

Here, Humphus shares her favorite local dining spots to frequent when she's not in BO-beau's Ocean Beach kitchen.

I love any restaurant that is a block away from mine! I get take out from here at least 3 times a week. It's ridiculous. I usually get the Hong Kong Chow Fun with pork, but have been known to switch it up with chicken lettuce wraps from time to time.

I cannot stay away from that Focaccia di recco. Do yourself a favor and add the honeycomb. I'm not too much of a drinker but their bartender, Noel, makes the most magical concoctions I've ever tasted.

Truthfully, I have never had a bad meal here. I always bring my out-of-town guests to this spot. They do one of my absolute favorite renditions of mussels (and I try mussels everywhere!), the butternut goat cheese spread is silky and satisfying to a fault, and when you really need a pick me up, the chicken and dumplings preferably split with a friend, is perfection.

You won't find a better BLT. Trust me. Plus, who doesn't love Hanis and Sara? I mean, really!

I was vegan once upon on a time and I have been coming here since it was called "Cafe Caspian." Love their Vegan wrap even now! Add tofu and ask for tabouli instead of pita chips. The owner and her daughters are so sweet and take true pride in their restaurant.

When I was living in Paris, I lived above an Indian restaurant and absolutely fell in love. Royal India is a close second to my Parisian Indian! I always get the lamb korma and never feel weird when I go solo to treat myself!

I REALLY enjoy Dim Sum. I have such a repertoire when it comes to ordering I have been known to be in and out in 40 minutes. Don't miss the rice cooked in banana leaves or of course, the steamed bbq pork buns.

Love love love this place! I'm pretty sure I've tried everything on the menu and have loved and devoured all of it. Special praise to the pelmeni and cabbage rolls.

I just went for the first time and had a really wonderful experience! Hank, the sous chef, just kept bringing out more food for me to try and with each dish I was more impressed. Love a restaurant that serves rabbit and scotch eggs. Give it a try!
