Michelin Announcing San Diego Discoveries and Stars This Month

The international restaurant guide will preview some local picks

After skipping publication in 2020 due to the pandemic, Michelin will be releasing the next California edition of its highly-debated restaurant guide at the end of September. Back in 2019 when the tire maker put out an inaugural California guide, Addison in Carmel Valley was San Diego’s sole Michelin star-earner while eight other local spots were given Bib Gourmand status, denoting them as “good quality, good value restaurants’.

Last fall, in lieu of the official red book, Michelin recognized a group of ‘new discoveries’ across the state, with five San Diego restaurants getting the nod. This year, the international restaurant guide has been teasing potential star-winners by sharing some recent favorites of its inspectors, starting in San Francisco and Los Angeles with the picks from San Diego and Orange County scheduled to be announced on Wednesday, September 15. Though it’s possible that some of these early honorees could be awarded Michelin stars or given Bib Gourmand designation when the full guide is released later this month, it’s not guaranteed.
