Sorrento Valley is now home to Kula, San Diego’s only all vegan and gluten-free ice cream shop. Launched at farmers markets, Kula previously operated out of a space shared with Maya’s Cookies but earlier this year, founder Libby Lefanowicz struck out on her own and built her own full-time ice cream production facility, transforming the front of the building into a new tasting room and scoop shop that’s open from noon to 6 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday.
The ice cream counter holds 12 flavors, from Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough (coconut milk with chunks of gluten-free cookie dough) to Lava Cake (almond milk with chunks of gluten-free cake) and Wine Not? (red wine sorbet swirled with roasted cashews and chocolate). Scoops of ice cream are available in sugar cones or housemade waffle cones, and cups of ice cream come with a waffle sugar cookie.

Well-known for accommodating dietary restriction and allergies. Lefanowicz has developed an array of bases and flavors, including nut-free, coconut-free, and sugar-free, to cater to the community at-large. Besides scoops and pints, customers can also pre-order gluten-free ice cream cakes.
Kula will continue to be a vendor at area farmers markets in Pacific Beach, Ocean Beach, North Park, Little Italy, and Hillcrest and pints of the ice cream are stocks at local markets like Valley Farm Market La Jolla, OB People’s Market, Specialty Produce, and Mission Square Market.
