With its founding in 2008 in Pacific Beach, Fig Tree Café was Rise & Shine Hospitality Group owner Johan Engman’s first entry into the daytime restaurant scene, a precursor to his popular Breakfast Republic brand, which he launched in 2015 and has since expanded throughout San Diego and beyond. It was followed by Breakfast Company and the takeout-oriented Eggies, which opened last year and since been paired up with many of Engman’s existing restaurants.
As he continues to blanket SoCal with Breakfast Republics — its 11th outpost is coming soon to downtown La Jolla — Engman is returning to his original restaurant and bringing a Fig Tree Café to Mission Valley. It’ll replace SanSai Japanese Grill on Hazard Center Drive, which shuttered last summer, though its arrival is still a ways out. Due in early 2022, the 2,568-square foot restaurant will open with an extended patio as three parking spots are being annexed into additional outdoor dining space. On top of the spacious sit-down restaurant, which will have a full liquor license, this Fig Tree will have a takeout window dedicated to the Eggies menu, a quick-service lineup of breakfast sandwiches and savory and sweet layered parfaits served in reusable glass jars.
