Recently transitioning from a weekly pop-up to all-day service Tuesday through Sunday, Birria El Rey has established a permanent presence in Golden Hill. Its tenure started last fall, when the food stand would post up on 25th street every Sunday, eventually expanding to weekends and finally becoming a full-time operation just last week.
The street-side eatery offers full and half-portions of Tijuana-style birria accompanied by bowls of chile-spiced soup and corn tortillas. The shredded beef also fills tacos, quesadillas, burritos, and tortas, as well as features in a culinary mashup known as birriamen, which combines ramen noodles with the stewed meat and broth.
Birria El Rey’s menu is currently available as takeout, however there is some outdoor seating for customers. Pre-orders are accepted via their Instagram @Birria_El_Rey or by phone at 619-843-4199. The eatery is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., or until the day’s batch of birria sells out.
