With our appetite for baked goods at an all-time high, a fresh bread and pastry purveyor has emerged in Pacific Beach to satisfy our collective cravings.
Hommage Bakehouse is the new in-house bakery for La Clochette Du Coin, whose original La Jolla Boulevard cafe launched in 2015. The recently-opened Cass Street location is its hub for baking production, with the kitchen viewable through a bay window.
Operating from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday, the cafe currently features outdoor seating and a menu that starts with coffee from Cafe Virtuoso and array of pastries, including almond croissants and kouign-amann from head baker Justin Gaspar, who previously trained at Manresa Bread in Los Gatos.
Co-owners and siblings Willy Wu Jye Hwa and Karine Beers also want to start a wholesale business, eventually building a separate facility for producing their naturally-leavened breads and laminated pastries.
Chef Sean Le handles the brunch section of the menu, which ranges from pandan waffles and duck confit salad, both inspired by his Vietnamese background, to omelets and tartines topped with everything from house-cured salmon gravlax to burrata and almond pesto or goat cheese and honey.
