A pop-up scheduled for Thursday, July 30 will provide a preview of Mmm...Cakes, the upcoming South Bay bakery and cafe headed up by veteran cake artist and caterer Jose Barajas, who has competed on several Food Network and TLC channel baking shows. Barajas is opening his first brick-and-mortar in his hometown of Chula Vista, where the 3,200-square-foot downtown space will include a bakery and an all-day restaurant.
With help from a Kickstarter campaign, Barajas is planning to launch Mmm...Cakes later this fall, offering everything from breakfast pastries and sandwiches to whole cakes, plated desserts, and weekend brunch with beer and wine. If the outdoor dining mandate continues, the eatery will be able to extend service onto a center courtyard.

Barajas described its design as “Miami with a sexy Golden Girls vibe”, so it’s wholly appropriate that his July 30 pop-up will celebrate the classic sitcom and its four sassy fictional roommates. Blanche, Rose, Dorothy, and Sophia will be commemorated in pastry, from character cookies and mini cheesecakes to a chocolate hazelnut cake in the shape of Sophia’s iconic wicker purse and an extra-large, peach-filled Pop-Tart inspired by the infamous “The Men of Blanche’s Boudoir” calendar.
All items must be pre-ordered online and will be available at the July 30 pop-up scheduled from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Thr3e Punk Ales Brewing Co. in Chula Vista.
