A year after leaving its original location on Fifth Avenue in heart of Hillcrest, local sweet shop Babycakes is coming back for a fresh start in the neighborhood. It’s returning to the corner of Fourth and Robinson, where it will replace the former Pinkberry frozen yogurt shop.

Established 2008 by Christopher Stavros, the bakery was one of the first in San Diego to capture the cupcake craze; over its 10 year tenure in Hillcrest, the cafe eventually morphed into a full restaurant and bar. Wanting to regroup and refocus on the company’s baking efforts, Stavros relocated Babycakes to Paradise Hills in 2018. The South Bay commercial kitchen fuels its Imperial Beach bakeshop and coffee house and supplies desserts to local hotels and restaurants.

Its signature specialty cupcakes come in a range of flavors, from salted caramel to tres leches, blood orange, and chocolate raspberry, but the bakery also offers customizable full-sized cakes and other sweet treats like brownies, cookies, and creme brulee cheesecake.

Stavros says that the new Hillcrest store should open this October. Along with its desserts, the shop may offer soft-serve ice cream and frozen yogurt along with wine and beer. Going forward, the bakery hopes to open additional storefronts in North County and East County.

Babycakes was represented by Brian Jinings, president of Venture Commercial.
