A monumental 7,000-square-foot, multi-story dining and entertainment venue has risen in the heart of Ocean Beach, The Holding Company (THC) officially opens on Thursday, July 4, bringing Newport Avenue another project from the locally-beloved family behind The Original OB Noodle House and OB Noodle House Bar 1502.
Owner Steve Yeng and his family arrived in Ocean Beach as Cambodian refugees; his parents operate the long-running OB Donuts while Steve and his brothers Kyle and Scott run the hugely popular, Guy Fieri-endorsed eateries. In 2016, they took over Gallagher’s Irish Pub, renaming the live music bar and eventually embarking on a $4.5 million, year and a half remodel that added a kitchen and two additional levels, taking the capacity of the space to over 500 guests.
Designed by Davis Ink (Parq, Sidebar, Stingaree) in a style that invokes Jules Verne and steampunk, the ground floor features a bar and nightly entertainment, from live music to DJs, hosted on a stage hung with a floating zepplin structure; manager Alex Glanzman says the programming will range from rock to hip hop and national acts. Moving cogs line a staircase that leads to the second floor, which houses the main dining area, a second bar, and an elevated patio. Perched high above the sidewalk, the rooftop lounge boasts stunning views of the ocean and Ocean Beach pier.
The bar offers high-end spirits and a beach-style cocktail menu from Sam Padilla; named after songs, the drinks range from California Love with Hornitos tequila, Ancho Reyes Verde, passionfruit puree, and lime to Comfortably Numb with Rittenhouse rye, Aperol, lemon, and IPA foam. The owners’ hit Skrewball Peanut Butter Whiskey will be featured prominently, both in cocktails and the food menu, which will include Skrewball Whiskey-marinated wings finished in caramelized whiskey sauce. Executive chef Ryan Ahrens and chef de cuisine Fermin Tinamisan, who both worked at Stake Chophouse in Coronado, will be cooking up a pho dip sandwich made with wagyu brisket cooked in pho broth, sizzling dry-rubbed salmon served with chicken rice, and shaken beef made with wok-tossed filet mignon. OB Noodle House classics, including the house garlic wings and house special Saigon fried rice, will also be available.
