Crowd-pleasing soft-serve ice cream shop SomiSomi just arrived in Mira Mesa. Originally hailing from Koreatown in Los Angeles, the dessert destination landed in San Diego in 2017 and is known for its popularity with the Instagram set. Open daily from noon to 11 p.m., the Mira Mesa outpost is offering six ice cream flavors, including ube and black sesame; weekly swirl combinations, such as Oreo/coffee and milk/matcha, are also available.
In lieu of cones, SomiSomi serves freshly-made, fish-shaped hollow pastries called ah-boong in Korean, which get a dollop of Nutella, custard, red bean, or taro filling before being crowned with a swirl of ice cream. Additional toppings include coconut flakes, rainbow sprinkles, and sugary cereal as well as a tiny macaron or fresh strawberry. A different version of the fish-shaped waffles can be ordered a la carte, with fillings ranging from red bean and cream cheese to cheddar cheese.
The brand is prepping for even more expansion in San Diego; another location is coming to Westfield UTC, where it’s estimated to open at the beginning of next year.
