Old Town pub Home & Away has expanded in a big way in Encinitas, where the “craft everything bar” has completely renovated the large corner spot on South Coast Highway that was previously occupied by D Street Bar and Grill. Founded by Jonathan Frank and Dennis O’Connor (Thorn Brewing) new operating partner Eric Johnson is overseeing this location. Johnson is an Encinitas resident and an admired vet of the local bar industry, having made his mark at Noble Experiment, Craft & Commerce, El Dorado, Sycamore Den, and Juniper & Ivy; most recently, he helped to open The Smoking Gun in the Gaslamp.
Open from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 a.m., the sports bar and casual eatery features two bars on the main level, with 20 taps and cocktail menu that includes drinks from Johnson like the TLP with tequila, lime, and passion fruit and his signature Toki Old Fashioned made with Japanese whisky, blood orange amaro, and black walnut bitter. Home & Away’s food lineup ranges from tacos, burritos, and nachos to burgers and sandwiches.
An upstairs annex they’re calling Aloha Cowboy could be launching as soon as this weekend and will operate from 6 p.m. to close Wednesday through Sunday. The intimate 25-seat bar gives Johnson the opportunity to offer a more complex cocktail menu that will change quarterly; opening drinks range from classic martinis and daiquiris to the Sea Biscuit with white rum, line, pineapple, celery syrup, absinthe, and salt and the High Noon with black tea gin, benedictine, milk, demarrera, and boba nutmeg. Aloha Cowboy will also feature a highball machine and a big selection of whiskey, rum, and agave spirits.
