Downtown Oceanside has a wine destination of its own with the debut of Coomber Craft Wines; the 3,500-square-foot Mission Avenue urban winery and tasting room, which features a 1,700-square-foot back patio, is now open Monday through Thursday from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from noon to 9 p.m.

Founders Skip and Maureen Coomber starting making wine a decade ago after investing in a custom crush facility in Santa Barbara County; initially creating the wine just for family and friends, the couple was spurred to go into commercial winemaking after receiving a 95-point rating from Wine Enthusiast Magazine for their 2010 Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon. Restaurateur Bertrand Hug of Mister A’s and Mille Fleurs was the first to embrace the wine, which is also available at acclaimed local eateries ranging from Market Del Mar to Pamplemousse.

With the new Oceanside winery, Coomber Craft Wines will be making some wine on-site and increasing production at its Santa Barbara-area facility. Around 16 different wines will be offered for tasting and purchase, from bottles of Signature Collection Lake County Pinot Noir to Vintner’s Collection Central Coast Chardonnay to kegs of rose. The winery will also be filling growlers and other reusable containers. The Coombers have another label, named Skater Girl after their skateboarding bulldog, that’s available nationwide but will not be sold in the tasting room.

The tasting room will serve charcuterie plates, but customers can also have food delivered from nearby eateries including Mission Avenue Bar and Grill. It will host live music on weekends, as well as open mic nights and exclusive events for its membership club.

Marc Karren of Location Matters facilitated the lease.
