What could be the world’s first cemetery-adjacent speakeasy has been unveiled inside Tahona, Old Town’s nearly one-year-old restaurant and bar. Oculto 477 pays homage to the neighboring El Campo Santo Cemetery, San Diego’s second oldest cemetery which dates back to 1849. The bar’s hidden entryway, located somewhere within Tahona, and its design are being kept secret not to spoil the surprise, but visitors will find a cozy 25-seat room with 477 lights to mark each of the grave sites at the burial ground.
While Tahona is all about agave spirits, with its own mezcal tasting room, Oculto 477 takes inspiration from the Prohibition era and the historic drinks created during the period. Beverage directors Blair Marano and Carlo Bracci Devoti have laid out their menu according to styles of cocktails, from low proof sippers like the Campo Sherry Cobbler made with Oloroso sherry, blackberry mole grenadine, and lemon to riffs on classics ranging from Sours and Old Fashioneds to Negronis and Fizzes, including the Senor Huesos Fizz with gin, spiced pineapple gomme, crème de peche, egg white, lemon, and cumin bitters. There’s even a punch bowl named after Yankee Jim, an infamous San Diego pioneer whose final resting place is located next door.
Now taking reservations online, Oculto 477 is open Tuesday through Sunday from 5 p.m. to midnight.
