InterContinental San Diego

Customers at a new downtown gelato shop will be able to see the frozen treat being churned before their very eyes. Gelato & Friends is moving into the base of the InterContinental San Diego, where it will face the waterfront and have its own dedicated entrance.

Owner Thomas Dolso recently moved from northeastern Italy to San Diego to launch the concept, which he hopes to multiply. Slated to open in November, the 750-square-foot shop will feature indoor and outdoor seating and offer 18 flavors of gelato including vegan and gluten-free options. Using local and seasonal fresh fruit as well as imported Italian ingredients like Sicilian pistachios, the gelato will be made using an innovative type of gelato machine that Gelato & Friends will be the first in California to employ. The machines will be on display at the counter where they will freeze small batches of gelato in just 10 minutes.

The family-run shop will also offer an espresso and coffee menu featuring Caffe Vergnano, a 137-year-old Italian roastery, as well as other snacks showcasing gelato including affogatos and gelato panini — cold gelato sandwiched in hot sweet bread with various toppings.
