South Park’s newest neighborhood hangout slides open starting tonight, with limited evening hours until this Friday, when Fernside will begin operating from 11 a.m. to midnight on weeknights and 2 a.m. on weekends; its kitchen will stay up late too, until 1 a.m. on weekends.
Created by a team of bar owners and industry veterans with the aim of providing an all-purpose gathering place for the community, the restaurant is a date night spot where kids and dogs are also welcome and both a leisurely lunch or dinner destination and an accessible stop for a quick bite or drink.
Entrees, including buttermilk fried chicken and a falafel platter, are coming soon but there are still plenty of options on the menu, from snacks and shareable plates ranging from flatbread with griddled haloumi cheese to sweet potato rolled tacos, chicken wings, salads, and sandwiches including riffs on a New Orleans po’ boy and mufaletta and both a vegan burger and In-N-Out-inspired double patty beef burger. A dedicated brunch menu will launch at a later date.
Beverages are by the eternally-popular Christian Siglin, the well-known local bartender who most recently created the cocktail menu at El Jardin and whose skills you may have seen at Craft & Commerce and Bankers Hill Bar + Restaurant. Beyond 22 beer taps and the wine list, his cocktails include the Thai-flavored Mr. Robinson with peanut butter bourbon, lime, sugar, and cucumber, an apple martini and White Russian that you actually want to drink, and a classic Spanish gin and tonic and red wine and cola-based Kalimotxo on draft.
