Richard Blais partners with Sidecar Doughnuts for Encinitas pop-up

Orange County’s acclaimed Sidecar Doughnuts will set up shop at The Crack Shack Encinitas on Sunday, August 26 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. where they’ll serve a new doughnut flavor designed by celeb chef Richard Blais. Modeled after a banana split, it features a banana chocolate chip cake topped with strawberry-banana glaze, chocolate sauce, salted and roasted peanuts, and a dried strawberry. A portion of proceeds will go to Traveling Stories, which provides the literacy resources and money management skills to kids. The popular bakery, which is opening a location at Del Mar Highlands, will also be parking its doughnut truck in front of its future storefront every Friday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Phoenix’s Pizzeria Bianco guest stars at Tribute Pizza

James Beard award-winning chef Chris Bianco, owner of the celebrated Pizzeria Bianco in Phoenix, will be in San Diego on Saturday, August 25 for a one-night-only event at North Park’s Tribute Pizza. Known as the father of the modern pizza movement and one of America’s top pizzaiolo, Bianco has been a mentor to Tribute Pizza’s chef/owner Mattrew Lyons. Their menu will combine signatures from Pizzeria Bianco and Tribute Pizza as well as recipes from Bianco’s cookbook “Bianco: Pizza, Pasta, and Other Food I Like”. The chefs will also be shopping at the Little Italy Mercato Farmers Market and Specialty Produce to source ingredients for some special seasonal dishes. Dinner service will run from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. with seating available on a first-come, first-served basis; reservations will be accepted for parties of 6 or more.

Cowboy Star to launch line of premium Wagyu beef jerky via Kickstarter

On Monday, August 13 at 8 a.m. EST, Cowboy Star Restaurant and Butcher Shop will be launching a Kickstarter campaign to kick off a new retail product, C-Star Provisions Premium Wagyu Beef Jerky. Inspired by one of the restaurant’s most beloved bar snacks, the jerky is made with Snake River Farms Waygu and is hormone, antibiotic and gluten-free and contains no nitrates, GMO’s or artificial ingredients. The Kickstarter campaign will help raise funds to officially release the jerky line later this year; created by chef Victor Jimenez, it will eventually be available in an assortment of flavors.

Salt & Straw Ice Cream debuts “Eat Your Vegetables” series

The latest specialty flavors at Salt & Straw, available through the month of August at the Little Italy scoop shop, are based on farmer’s market produce. The series, dubbed “Eat Your Vegetables in Ice Cream”, sees head ice cream maker Tyler Malek working ingredients sourced from Southern California farms into flavors ranging from Green Fennel & Maple to Chocolate Date Shake, Freckled Chocolate Zucchini Bread, Beet Red Velvet Cake, and Cream Cheese & Tomatillo Chutney.
