Prepare for generous portions of authentic Middle-Eastern cuisine at the Gateway at Kearny Mesa retail hub next month when Simsim debuts a revamped take on rotisserie sliced shawarma meals.

Pushing for an announced Aug. 13 opening date, Simsim’s corner space at 7051 Clairemont Mesa Blvd. takes over a 2,100-square-foot former employment office, close to Niban’s Japanese Restaurant and the New York-style dishes of Elijah’s. Shawarma features marinated strips of seasoned meat and chicken slow roasted on a vertical rotisserie.

Created to offer something different, Simsim is embracing its outsider status in the fast-casual marketplace and has already trademarked a handful of slogans — including “in a world of potatoes, dare to be a tomato” and “when life gives you lemons make orange juice” — to help define its mission.

Diners can look forward to a modern and upbeat atmosphere and a menu focused on seasoned meat and chicken prepared on a traditional vertical rotisserie, shaved and then served in a freshly baked saj wrap or in a custom bowl with vegetables and house-made sauces.

Future opening hours have yet to be revealed.
