Inspired by Spanish churro shops, The Churreria Cafe has opened a flagship location in Kearny Mesa. Cooked to order in a special fryer imported from Spain, the churros measure eight to ten inches and are made from a simple dairy and egg-free dough. The result is crisp but a bit denser in texture than Mexican style churros, which are often incorporated butter and eggs.
In Spain, the churros are served with thick liquid chocolate for dipping. It will eventually be offered at The Churreria Cafe, joining a beverage menu which includes a milkier style of hot chocolate as well as coffee drinks. The freshly-fried churros are coated in cinnamon sugar and served in sets of four, with optional toppings including cookie crumbs and coconut available. A stuffed churro, offered by the pair, is available with either sweet cream or Nutella filling. The churros can also garnish vanilla and matcha soft-serve ice cream. Seasonal specials will also be offered, ranging from maple-bacon to pumpkin spice churros.
