The Barrel Room Wine Bar & Bistro and Mason Ale Works Tasting Room + Kitchen debut in Carmel Valley on Tuesday, May 29. The adjacent venues are by 3LB Hospitality Group’s Grant Tondro and brothers Zak and Nate Higson, the owners of Urge Gastropub, whose deep portfolio spans everything from craft beer (Mason Ale Works) and wine (The Barrel Room) to gourmet deli (Brothers Provisions), cocktails (101 Proof), pizza (Lo Fi Pie), and coffee (Mason Coffee Works).
The two new restaurants and bars anchor Merge Carmel Valley, whose developers also built North City San Marcos, where 3LB group opened the 21,000-square-foot Urge Gastropub and Common House last spring.
This is the second location of The Barrel Room Wine Bar & Bistro, whose flagship is in Rancho Bernardo. The 125-seat space includes a spacious patio and offers a mostly New World wine list, with 40 wines by the glass available, paired with a menu that spans steak to seafood, made-to-orders pizzas, fresh pasta, cheese and charcuterie; new to this outpost is a full bar with craft cocktails. Open daily at 11:30 a.m., the restaurant will also serve brunch starting at 10 a.m. on Sundays.
Executive chef Trevor Chappel will oversee the kitchen at The Barrel Room as well as the adjacent Mason Ale Works Tasting Room + Kitchen. This first satellite tasting room for the brewery will feature 20 taps of beer brewed at Mason Ale Works’ locations in San Marcos and Oceanside alongside a bar stocked with an extensive whiskey selection that will also mix up beer-based cocktails. Chappel’s menu for the tasting room, which includes an outdoor patio and private dining space, will focus on shareable plates ranging from bar snacks to gourmet salads and sandwiches as well as cured meats made in an on-site charcuterie room. The charcuterie program should launch soon, with housemade salumi, prosciutto, and more that will also be available in a retail section featuring grab-and-go food, Mason Ale Works beer, and other guest bottles.
