Strictly Dumpling’s Mike Chen stops in San Diego
Fans of YouTube eating champ Mike Chen of Strictly Dumpling, who counts more than 3.5 million subscribers across his six YouTube channels, can see him in action when Chen headlines an event at The San Diego Chinese Historical Museum (SDCHM) on Saturday, June 2. From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., local chefs including Marcus Twilegar of Parq, Tress Balch of Happy Sushi, and Sushi on a Roll’s Jeff Roberto will cook up noodle dishes based on instant ramen for Chen to judge. Event ticket-holders will also be able to taste the chefs’ creations along with other appetizers, small bites, and beer from Duck Foot Brewing Company. General admission is $40.
Who loves poke?
The annual I Love Poke Festival is coming back to the Bali Hai on Shelter Island this Tuesday, May 22. Created by OnoYum’s Nino “Neens” Camilo, the ninth edition of the competition and tasting event will feature live music, drinks, and 30 local chefs and restaurants as well as special guests hailing from Hawaii, including Ahi Assassins Fish Co., Aloha Shoyu and Hawaiian Pie Company, offering their takes on poke and other island-inspired dishes. Tickets are $75.
Get spirited at the San Diego County Fair
One of the best events associated with the San Diego County Fair is Distilled: San Diego Spirit & Cocktail Festival, which takes places from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday, June 23. Guests can sample close to 200 spirits and mixers from both locally-based and global distilleries to a soundtrack of live music and hear presentations from industry cocktail experts. $33 general admission tickets include a 10-tab wristband for 1/4-ounce pours of distilled spirits and 1-ounce pours of mixed cocktails) plus admission to the fair while $125 VIP tickets get you access to a special lounge with unlimited food tastings.
