Our collective doughnut dreams are about to become reality: Sidecar Doughnuts, one of Southern California’s best-loved doughnut shops, is expanding to San Diego. Founded in 2012 in Orange County, Sidecar’s flagship store is in Costa Mesa; in 2015, it added an outpost in the Los Angeles beach city of Santa Monica.

Sidecar’s doughnut menu rotates regularly, spanning special monthly flavors ranging from rosemary lemon drop to tiramisu and birthday cake, and signature varieties including butter and salt and huckleberry; there’s even a savory doughnut filled with a poached egg, ham, and basil hollandaise sauce. All doughnuts are made fresh in small batches throughout the day.

Its Santa Monica location is adjacent to LA-based casual eatery Mendocino Farms, which also operates branches in La Jolla and Carmel Valley. Sidecar and Mendocino Farms will also be neighbors in San Diego as tenants in the Del Mar Highlands Town Center complex. Sidecar will slot in next to Nekter Juice Bar; a rep tells Eater that the shop will open in September.
