Mikkeller Brewing, the well-regarded Danish brewery that landed in San Diego in 2016, will spend 2018 growing its local presence. First founded in Copenhagen by famously nomadic brewer Mikkel Borg Bjergsø, Mikkeller put down roots in Miramar when it moved into AleSmith Brewing Company’s former production facility. The brewery is now gearing up to expand its footprint on Cabot Drive, where it will add on a kitchen and restaurant space to its existing tasting room. Known for its culinary interests, Mikkeller also operates several eateries around the world, including the Michelin-starred Upstairs at Mikkeller in Bangkok, Thailand; Copenhagen’s Ramen To Bíiru; Mikkeller & Friends in Reykjavík, Iceland; and the Mikkeller Bar locations in Los Angeles and San Francisco.

Matthew Hanlon, general manager of Mikkeller Brewing San Diego, says that both its square footage and beer production will increase threefold on Miramar, where they should have the food component launched by midsummer. And the company has chosen Little Italy for its first, and perhaps only, satellite tasting room. The intimate 875-square-foot space will reflect its European locations in design, and complement its core lineup by focusing its 18 taps on unique and eclectic beers, including high-end and rare barrel-aged area, which are not served in Miramar. Open daily from noon to 10 p.m., the India Street tasting room should be up and running this spring.
