The latest addition to the local craft spirits scene, Storyhouse Spirits, is putting down roots in the East Village where the company is in the process a building a new distillery, bar and restaurant. The 7,500-square-foot warehouse space, which sits on the same block of J Street as The Mission, will include lower level and mezzanine dining areas, with 5,000-square-feet dedicated to a distilling facility that will be viewable behind glass and accessible for tours. The restaurant’s menu will hinge on a wood-fired oven, which will produce relaxed bar snacks and more composed dishes including flatbreads, claypot mussels, onion soup, and saffron clams.
Its first offerings from co-founder and head distiller Matt Kidd will include a neutral vodka and a vodka infused with Meyer lemon and cucumber, plus a classic London dry gin and a gin made with local botanicals. Other clear spirits will range from a white rum to an unaged white whiskey. A variety of bourbon, rye and whiskey will be aged in barrels for future release. Storyhouse Spirits will feature a full cocktail bar, serving drinks made with its house spirits. Until its own brown spirits are ready, the distillery will source other products with a similar flavor profile.
Co-founder and director of business development Steve Kuftinec, Uinta Brewing’s former vice president of sales who spent 18 years with the Utah-based brewery, says that the distillery and restaurant is currently slated to launch in early August. Initially, it will be open from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. on weekends.
