Counting “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” and Walt Disney among her inspirations, Creme & Sugar owner Joanna Czikalla is bringing her Unicorn Hot Chocolate, a social media sensation, to Del Mar. Since it was created in late 2016, dessert fans and trend seekers have been flocking to Czikalla’s original cafe in Anaheim Hills for the Instagram-ready hot chocolate, dyed pink and showered with sprinkles and fruity marshmallows, which has spawned other popular versions of the colorful unicorn dessert including milkshakes, sundaes and layer cakes.
Next month, the Orange County shop will expand to the Beachside Del Mar Shopping Center on Del Mar Heights Road, where its 1,350-square-foot space will be filled to the brim with Czikalla’s sweet creations. Beyond the unicorn desserts, Creme & Sugar offers Cookie Butter milkshakes, Butterbeer ice cream floats, S’mores sundaes, cookie ice cream sandwiches and custom cakes as well as coffee and tea drinks. Andrew Yun, who is guiding the company’s growth, says the Del Mar location will offer some exclusive menu items as well as functioning as a production hub for both stores.
