Seafood Sandwich Pros Land in Little Italy

SuperNatural Sandwiches expands to Kettner Boulevard

Seafood-stuffed sandwiches swim into Little Italy with the arrival of SuperNatural Sandwiches; the eatery’s regular operating hours, from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily, kick off Friday, November 30. Founded as a farmer’s market vendor, SuperNatural went brick-and-mortar in 2014 and runs sandwich shops in Miramar and Pacific Beach as well as food hall offshoots in Santa Ana and Tijuana.

Its new 1,500-square-foot Kettner Boulevard location slots into AV8, a luxury apartment complex that’s also the future home of Bobboi Gelato and LA-based Zinqué Restaurant & Wine Bar; SuperNatural plans to cater to the building’s residents, offering free door-to-door delivery.

Known for working with local seafood distributors for the fresh catch that fills its sandwiches, SuperNatural’s core menu includes the Siren with spicy garlic shrimp, the Neptune with scallops and smoked bacon, and a lobster grilled cheese called the Griffin. Available exclusively in Little Italy are the Kaiju with Cantonese-style ginger scallion lobster and a Korean fried calamari sandwich dubbed the Jaeger. The menu is rounded out with loaded fries and sides ranging from fried rice to Thai tuna crudo. Non-sandwich dishes featuring Southeast Asian flavors and other seafood such as conch will be added, as well as desserts. Beer and wine is also on the way.

Co-founder Anthony Tran says that the group is concentrating its expansion efforts locally, with interest in neighborhoods from North Park to North County.
