Opening this Thursday in University Heights is Stella Jean’s Ice Cream, the new frozen treats shop launched by the Pop Pie team next door to their flagship eatery. Open from noon to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, from noon to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Sunday, the charming storefront features a wall-sized mural from Lauren Asta and an array of premium 16 percent ice cream made in small, four-quart batches.
Those familiar with the creative pie stylings of executive chef Gan Suebsarakham can now experience his artfulness with ice cream. The rotating roster of flavors includes Salty Caramel Corn, Mint Chocolate Chunk made with fresh mint and homemade brownies, and Earl Gray Citrus Tea Cake made with butterfly pea tea. Produce from the nearby Hillcrest farmer’s market will make it into future flavors, as well as a variety of sweet pies from Pop Pie (next door, Pop Pie will be incorporating the ice cream into affogatos). And there will always be a couple vegan flavors offered, including Matcha Pistachio and Pineapple and Sweet Paprika sorbet.
The shop will bake its own waffle cones, which are vegan and gluten-free, make ice cream sandwiches with brioche buns, and mix up milkshakes; pints of staple flavors will also be available. Stella Jean’s Ice Cream will be featured at Pop Pie’s new restaurant and bar in Ocean Beach, which will have an ice cream counter and walk-up window.
