Joining the recently-opened Snooze, the soon-to-open Philz Coffee and Mendocino Farms in The Shops at La Jolla Village is The Melt, a casual eatery known for its burgers and grilled cheese sandwiches. Founded in San Francisco in 2011, it has multiple outposts throughout California and two in Texas; this first San Diego location is slated to open at the end of September.

The Melt’s menu is based on all-American comfort food favorites and plenty of oozy, gooey cheese. The burger patties are made with a custom blend of Angus and Wagyu beef, with a topping of melted cheese, and its classic grilled cheese presses a mix of sharp cheddar, muenster and fontina cheeses on artisan French bread; riffs on the grilled cheese include a cheesesteak variety and another stuffed with mac ‘n’ cheese. Based on a quick-service model built on the magic of technology, with in-store self-order kiosks, and The Melt apps for both iOs and Android, the eatery also offers salads, sides and desserts ranging from soft-serve ice cream to handspun milkshakes and root beer floats.
