Award-winning San Diego-based Bird Rock Coffee Roasters was one of several Bay Park businesses affected by last week’s water main break along Morena Boulevard. Local news reports noted that although the popular coffee bar suffered some damage, quick-thinking staff members were able to minimize this by using sandbags to block off windows and save product from the rising waters.
Coffee-buyer Chuck Patton, who first launched Bird Rock Coffee Roasters (BRCR) in 2002 and opened its flagship cafe in 2006, told Eater that, while the retail area has been closed since the flooding no coffee or equipment was affected, so production roasting has still been possible. After replacing and re-painting some drywall all is now good at the roasters, who officially re-opened at 6 a.m. this morning.
Currently operating coffee bars in Bird Rock, Little Italy and the Morena district, thanks to a recent merge with PT’s Coffee Roasting Company, there are plans to add more BRCR retail cafes in San Diego and farther up the coast in the near future.
