Viewpoint Brewing Co., Del Mar’s first brewery and restaurant, has a dreamy new location on the banks of the San Dieguito Lagoon and River Park just north of Del Mar Village and within eyeshot of the Del Mar Fairgrounds. Aiming to be fully up and running by Opening Day of the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, it is a long-awaited first venture for founder Charles Koll, a local chef and homebrewer. The 7,000-square-foot brewery and restaurant is a family affair; the sleek yet warm warehouse space was designed by his sister-in-law, with his father, family members and friends counted among its backers and builders.

Putting a seasonal restaurant spin on gastropub fare is executive chef Gunnar Planter (Mille Fleurs), whose menu is meant to pair with its house beer, made by Koll and head brewer Moe Katomski, including the malty Red Rye IPA and the French farmhouse-style Smash Saison. Take a deeper look at the food through our menu preview here.

Open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m, the tasting room will initially offer light bites from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., with full dinner service starting at 4 p.m. Brunch and counter-service lunch will follow. The community-minded brewery has a ‘Buy a Bird a Beer’ listing on the menu, with the $6 donation going directly to the San Dieguito River Valley Conservancy. Viewpoint also plans to launch a ‘Mug Club’, in which members will get a personal mug and locker with an engraved name tag; membership includes a 20 ounce beer for the price of a regular pour plus discounts on apparel and special VIP invites.
