More Asian desserts are headed to San Diego. Bambu Desserts & Drinks, which specializes in chè, or sweet Vietnamese beverages, soups and puddings, is expanding to Kearny Mesa. The dessert cafes were founded in 2008 in San Jose by four Vietnamese sisters and now number over 50 shops across multiple states including California, Oregon, Washington, Texas and Pennsylvania.
A tipster alerted us to Bambu’s new spot on Convoy Street, where it joins the Plaza Del Sol complex that also houses China Max restaurant. Scheduled to open in early August, the shop will have a large menu of made-to-order chè based on fresh coconut water or coconut milk and other ingredients in an array of flavors and textures, from pandan jelly to basil seed, mung bean, taro and avocado; there are signature drink creations but Vietnamese espresso and blended coffees, and fruit smoothies.
