Down Home Gluten-Free Bakery Opens in Hillcrest

Santee’s Starry Lane Bakery relocates

Facebook

Jaime Schwartz and her sister Jennifer have moved their Starry Lane Bakery to Hillcrest after a little over five years in East County. Increasing demand for their product and the desire to be a little closer to their main customer base prompted the move from Santee, and Schwartz says that the 4th Street building that houses the new bakery has the old world charm that fits their old fashion, down home philosophy.

The bakery specializes in baked goods that are free of the top 10 food allergens, so those allergic to gluten, soy, egg, dairy and peanuts are safe here. There are homemade cookies, cupcakes, brownies, fruit tarts, poundcakes and a variety of breads, and Starry Lane also does brisk business in custom cakes.

As it gears up for a grand opening scheduled for later this summer, the bakery has introduced several popular new items, including cinnamon rolls, pretzel rolls, a vibrant red velvet cake made without artificial food dye and a recipe for vanilla cranberry scones that was two and half years in the making. Also new to the Hillcrest space is a seating area that can accommodate 20.
