Tacos El Gordo Getting Closer to Downtown Debut

We won’t have to wait too much longer

Yelp

Tacos El Gordo may finally open in the Gaslamp neighborhood. Yes, really.

There have been numerous construction delays since Eater first announced the taco shop’s downtown expansion just over a year ago. But a rep told us that the eatery might be completed as soon as next month although no concrete opening date has been identified.

Still, it’s encouraging news for fans of the Tacos El Gordo’s street-style tacos, which are built on double-stacked handmade corn tortillas; its most popular varieties are the grilled carne asada and pork adobada shaved off a vertical roaster. The family-owned company has been in the food business for 45 years, opening its first San Diego outpost in 1998. The company now operates five locations in total, including three in Las Vegas. The new Gaslamp spot, at the corner of 5th and F Street in the historic William Penn Building, spans 2,200-square-feet and includes a 900-square-foot mezzanine.
