Better Buzz Coffee Expands in Pacific Beach, Plans New Two-Story Project in Hillcrest

The local company grows its reach

Founded in 2002, Better Buzz Coffee Roasters started as a humble coffee cart but has since grown to span a production roasting facility in Vista and six cafes around San Diego. Blending quality coffee with fast service, Better Buzz opened its first storefront, a cafe and drive-thru, on Garnet Avenue ten years ago. Buoyed by its bustling business, the company launched its seventh location last month on 1186 Garnet Avenue, just west of its flagship in Pacific Beach. Open from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m., the cafe features plenty of patio seating and a menu that ranges from espresso bar and specialty drinks to smoothies, sandwiches, pastries and acai bowls. Daniel Greig, Better Buzz’s director of coffee production, tells Eater that the original Pacific Beach location will soon undergo a refresh to align it, design and menu-wise, with its newer counterparts.

And Better Buzz Coffee Roasters’ next project is a big one. In a two-story building at 801 University Avenue in Hillcrest which was once intended for a new Japanese restaurant, Better Buzz will plant a vintage Probat coffee roaster imported from Germany that will roast beans for the on-site cafe and retail sales. With the aim of showing customers the cycle of coffee from green beans to consumption, the roastery will be ringed by bar-style seats in full view of the roasters at work; behind large glass windows, Better Buzz will also display a full-scale production cold brew coffee lab. The 8,000-square-foot space will include spacious offices for meetings and classes catered by the cafe.
