Bird Rock Coffee Roasters Planning West Coast Expansion

The local roaster merges with a Midwest-based brand

Bird Rock Morena Blvd

Award-winning San Diego-based Bird Rock Coffee Roasters is poised for growth after selling a controlling share of the company to PT’s Coffee Roasting Company, a specialty coffee brand founded in Kansas and operates a booming wholesale business that reaches over 30 states. In 2009, PT’s was named Coffee Roaster of the Year by “Roast Magazine”.

PT’s Coffee Roasting Company co-founder Jeff Taylor will become president of Bird Rock Coffee Roasters and The Topeka Capital Journal reports that Taylor and his wife will be relocating to San Diego to help expand the brand.

Bird Rock Coffee Roasters (BRCR) owner Chuck Patton, who first launched BRCR in 2002 and opened its flagship cafe in 2006, will remain with the company as the coffee buyer for both BRCR and PT’s. Patton tells Eater that the merger will enable BRCR, which currently operates coffee bars in Bird Rock, Little Italy and the Morena district, to add more retail cafes in San Diego and up the coast; a new location could open by this summer. He shared, “After 15 years, I was finding it difficult to move the company forward so this partnership with PT’s now gives us the capacity for major growth. There will be more opportunities for our employees to grow and I can take a step away from the day-to-day business and focus on our continued efforts to source stellar coffee.”
