Our collective sweet dream is coming true; Portland’s Salt & Straw Ice Cream is currently scheduled to swing open the doors of its very first San Diego storefront in Little Italy on Tuesday, December 26 at 11 a.m. In celebration of the opening, the company is giving away free single serve scoops tonight and tomorrow in front of its India Street shop starting at 7 p.m. until supplies last. And if you need ice cream delivered right to your door, pints of its classic flavors will be available on Postmates starting tonight at 6 p.m.
In addition to Salt & Straw’s classic year-round flavors, including Sea Salt with Caramel Ribbons, Chocolate Gooey Brownie, Honey Lavender and Almond Brittle with Chocolate Ganache, the San Diego shop will also have some exclusive flavors using SoCal-sourced ingredients. The Peanut Butter Stout with Chocolate Chicharrón features an ice cream base of Belching Beaver Brewery Peanut Butter Milk Stout mixed into malt-steeped cream with dark chocolate-coated caramelized pork chicharrón while the James Coffee & Compartes Love Nuts pairs coffee ice cream made with the local roaster’s cold brew with chocolate-dipped caramel covered pecans. And ribbons of Oaxacan chocolate from LA’s La Guelaguetza Restaurant are swirled into the ice cream innovator’s Avocado & Oaxacan Chocolate Fudge.
Seasonal flavors will rotate in throughout the year; starting opening day and running until January 5 are a set of special holiday flavors ranging from Peppermint Cocoa with homemade peppermint patties and chocolate ice cream, Apple Brandy & Pecan Pie that features Clear Creek apple brandy and hunks of homemade pecan pie, Gingerbread Cookie Dough with molasses cookie butter swirled into Rum Royal Icing ice cream and Caramelized Grapefruit Eggnog spiked with fresh grapefruit juice and homemade caramelized grapefruit jam.
