Newly minted in Ocean Beach is Royale, which replaces Sessions Public. Run by a trio of new proprietors, Royale spent a year as the resident pop-up at University Heights’ Park & Rec before finding this permanent home where the communities of Ocean Beach and Point Loma meet.
Based primarily on burgers, the eatery offers a signature Royale with Cheese that features a 1⁄3-pound patty with bacon, gruyere, caramelized onion and special sauce. There’s also a Patty Melt, a fried-eggplant topped vegan burger with a seitan/roasted broccoli patty plus grilled cheese and fried chicken and fish sandwiches, all available with fries or tater tots. Other dishes include a smoked trout salad and cheese and charcuterie plates. Open at 4pm on weekdays, Royale will open at 9 a.m. on weekends with a brunch menu of breakfast sandwiches, salmon toast and morning eats ranging from eggs Benedict to a Croque Madame and a yogurt/granola parfait.
The vibrant new space by Ariane Bartosh Interior Design includes an expanded bar pouring local beer and wine on tap. The full bar also offers a seven-drink menu each featuring different base spirits, with many of the cocktails made with citrus from the owners’ Valley Center farm.
A happy hour will run from 4 to 6 p.m. on weekdays and again from 10 p.m. until closing. Royale will also have a late night menu, served from 10 p.m. onwards.
