Ready your smartphone cameras, the Instagrammable sweet treats from Somi Somi have landed. Opening today is the first San Diego outpost, which shares space with Kearny Mesa’s Caffe Bene. It’s just the second branch of the exceedingly popular dessert shop, which opened last October in Los Angeles’ Koreatown.
Somi Somi’s concise menu centers around ah-boong, or Korean fish-shaped pastries filled with red bean, custard or Nutella and a swirl of soft serve ice cream. Somi Somi makes and fills the fish waffle cones fresh to order; soft serve flavors include milk, matcha, black sesame and ube, or purple yam. Each fish waffle costs $5.95 and comes with unlimited toppings ranging from Fruity Pebbles to Oreo crumbles; cups of straight soft serve are $3.75.
San Diego owner Sean Kim says that he’s planning on opening more Somi Somi locations in the area; he intends to swap out Caffe Bene for Sul & Beans, a related concept to Somi Somi that serves Korean shaved ice, or bingsoo, plus trendy coffee and tea drinks and sweet snack called injeolmi toast.
