A fixture in North Park since 2014, City Tacos is headed to East County, where it will open a location in downtown La Mesa Village. Owner Gerry Torres, who also operates Tostadas in North Park and IB Street Tacos in Imperial Beach, is partnering with Aaron Dean, chair of the La Mesa Village Association and owner of La Mesa’s gas station-turned-daytime eatery Sheldon’s Service Station. The new City Tacos Village Taqueria will replace Dean’s BLVD Asian Kitchen, spanning a 1,800-square-foot space that will include a sidewalk patio and large back patio.
Currently scheduled to open in late November, the eatery will feature 16 of City Tacos’ most popular tacos, plus new side dishes and a seasonal menu of specials. There will a variety of micheladas offered, along with craft beer, ciders, aguas frescas made with fresh fruit and Mexican sodas. Torres, who is also bringing City Tacos to Imperial Beach in a collaborative project with Mike Hess Brewing, said, “We are excited to open City Tacos Village Taqueria in a community that has so much heart and history. La Mesa has transformed tremendously over the recent years, and continues to do so. We hope to become a spot that residents will feel welcomed and recognized while providing great food worth gathering for.”
