New Chef Signed for La Valencia; San Diego Scores World Beer Cup Awards

LA JOLLA— Following the departure of James Montejano for Cardiff's Seaside Market, the legendary La Valencia Hotel has named Alex Emery as the property's new executive chef. A San Diego native and San Diego Culinary Institute grad, Emery has worked in several local kitchens, including The Pearl, Knotty Barrel and Oceanaire and spent time at "The Pink Lady" while cooking at various charity events hosted at the hotel; in particular, he'll oversee La Valencia's signature restaurant, THE MED. PHILADELPHIA— The World Beer Cup awards were recently handed out in Philadelphia; the highly-regarded global competition hands out gold, silver and bronze medals in 96 beer style categories. San Diego brought home 14 medals total, with Fall Brewing, Mike Hess Brewing, Amplified Ale Works, Monkey Paw and Breakwater Brewing taking gold. Other local breweries that scored include New English Brewing Co., AleSmith and Ballast Point, which won two awards. [EaterWire]

VIRGINIA— Local bottle shop and tasting room Bottlecraft, which operates outposts in Little Italy, North Park and the new Liberty Public Market, is heading east. A Bottlecraft location ill open in a Virginia Beach shopping center this summer with 24 taps and a large retail beer selection. [Southside Daily]
