A favorite hangout for local fishermen and fans of dive bars, Club Marina has been offering up cheap drinks, free pool and a friendly haven to a cast of characters in Point Loma for over 40 years. Now, it enters its next chapter — new proprietor Chad Cline is signing the lease today and will officially take over the bar on Wednesday, June 1.
Cline, who co-owns The Waterfront Bar & Grill in Little Italy, Rosecrans' Harbor Town Pub and is working on another related concept in the Midway area that will open in July, obviously knows a thing or two about running a successful dive bar. He tells Eater that he doesn't plan on making any drastic changes to the tenured bar, including a name change, because of its long history in the neighborhood.
There will be minor tweaks to the interior and exterior, from spruced up bathrooms to a new draft beer system, plus more games (ski ball is a possibility), but Cline says he wants to maintain the Club Marina vibe — still welcoming to its regulars but also appealing to a new audience. He is considering a food component, but in dive bar fashion it will be of the microwaveable variety, limited to frozen burritos, hot dogs and the like.
