Tacos El Gordo, which has roots in Tijuana, opened its first San Diego location in 1998 and now operates a handful of spots here and in Las Vegas. Eater has learned that the family-owned and operated company will open another eatery in the heart of the Gaslamp at 5th and F Street.
Retail Insite's Jim Rinehart and Erin Cadieux facilitated the lease for the space, a former Starbucks, which spans 2,200-square-feet on the ground floor and a 900-square-foot mezzanine in the William Penn Building.
A rep for Tacos El Gordo, which specializes in Tijuana-style tacos, says that the Gaslamp outpost is slated to open by the end of summer. The company hopes to expand further in San Diego, but nothing is planned at the moment.
