South of the Border-Inspired Del Sur Swings Into South Park

30th Street gets a dose of Mexican soul food.

Officially introducing itself to the public tonight is Del Sur, which has undergone a name swap since the Mexican eatery was first announced earlier this month. Owner and South Park resident Lauren Passaro, who founded Kensington Cafe, co-owns Del Sur and The Haven Pizzeria on Adams Avenue with business partner Kate Grimes.

New skylights and a reconfiguration of the space have adding brightness and extra seating to the former Belgian restaurant, which is now open from 4 to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Sunday, with brunch served Friday through Sunday.

Executive chef Sergio Garcia (Tacos Barrios) is putting a twist on traditional "grandma" dishes — starters include ceviche made with local fish, street corn, bean and potato flautas on tomatillo cream sauce and queso fundido with roasted chiles, onions and mushrooms while larger plates range from tacos and burrito to combo platters and specialities such as a panela cheese-stuffed chile relleno and chicken-filled enchilada suizas in a caramelized tomato sauce.

The bar program, which includes Mexican lagers and local craft beers on tap, also features a good selection of agave-based spirits, margarita variations and frozen pops, from sangrita to spicy pineapple-lime, to melt into and flavor micheladas and cheladas.
