A weekend-only concept featuring sweet and savory waffles will emerge inside Del Mar's Broken Yolk Cafe in early 2017. Starting on January 13, the breakfast-centric eatery will extend its hours to 5 to 9 .m. on Friday and Saturday evenings to function as the new counter service-style waffle bar.

Specializing in Liege waffles, a Belgian-style waffle with a rich, buttery dough and pockets of caramelized sugar, the waffle bar's menu will have both sweet and savory topping options, ranging from s'mores and bananas Foster to lox-avocado and tomato-burrata. A gluten-free traditional Belgian waffle will also be available.

The Del Mar eatery is the only Broken Yolk with a bar, so the waffles will be offered with a drink menu that include craft beer, wine, and cocktails.

Randy Corrigan, who owns this outpost as well as Broken Yolk franchises in Oceanside and Carmel Mountain Ranch, with another coming to Mira Mesa in Summer 2017, tells Eater that he may expand the waffle bar to more nights of the week in Del Mar and potentially roll out the concept out at other Broken Yolk locations.
