This Wednesday, Cafe Virtuoso will unveil a newly-renovated coffee house in Barrio Logan, which sits on the same block as its roasting and wholesale facility. Open weekdays from 6:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., Cafe Virtuoso is San Diego’s only 100% certified organic speciality coffee roaster and was founded in 2008 by Laurie Britton. Its coffee counter has been significantly expanded, and now holds taps pouring its signature cold brew and cold brew on nitro, plus San Luis Obispo’s Whalebird Kombucha. The new setup also includes a built-in pour over "filter bar" for brewing full Chemex and Kalita pots of freshly roasted coffee.
The interior of the space has been completely refreshed, and will include custom-made furniture ranging from community tables to cozy seating. Also new is an array of fresh-based pastries from local Bread & Cie bakery.
Savannah Britton, the roastery’s head of quality control who is also a SCAA/Barista Guild of America Level 2 Certified Barista, will be the board chair and the lead instructor of a newly-formed non-profit organization that will share space with the cafe; the certified Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA) coffee training facility will focus on helping disadvantaged populations acquire general working skills and SCAA job training certifications to begin new careers in the specialty coffee industry.
