SoCal-Based Farm-to-Table Sandwich Concept Spreads to San Diego

Mendocino Farms plans to plant roots in several local neighborhoods

A popular gourmet sandwich (and beyond) concept with over a dozen locations in Southern California is establishing a San Diego presence with two locations already set for the area and more future outposts planned.

Mendocino Farms, founded in 2005 by Mario Del Pero and Ellen Chen, puts a chef-driven spin on a fast-casual menu of seasonal sandwiches and salads based on house-smoked meat and local and regional ingredients; open for lunch and dinner, its offerings generally fall in the $9 to $12 price range.

Its debut location will open in early December at The Shops at La Jolla Village at 8795 Villa La Jolla Drive in the same complex as Whole Foods Market, a stakeholder in the growing company. Del Pero and Chen are collaborating with Galaxy Taco chef Christine Rivera on an opening sandwich that will donate sales to a local charity.

All of its kid-friendly, neighborhood-focused eateries are designed differently, and Mendocino Farms will be working with local firm Bluemotif Architecture (The Crack Shack, Kettner Exchange) on its second San Diego site, which will replace Carnitas' Shack Shack in the Del Mar Highlands Town Center. Carnitas' Snack Shack will shutter there by the end of the year and Mendocino Farms expects to be up and running by Spring 2017.
