Shake Shack Confirms San Diego Expansion; Will Open in UTC

Rejoice, burger fans

The rumors are true. Shake Shack, the wildly-popular burger concept first founded by famed chef Danny Meyer in New York City, is headed to San Diego.

Earlier this year, Eater got early word that the burger behemoth has been scouting San Diego as part of its West coast expansion blitz, and both commenters and tipsters whispered that Shake Shack would be part of Westfield UTC's planned $500 million expansion.

Today, Marketing & Communications Manager Adam Shapiro confirmed that the publicly-traded burger restaurant chain will indeed open in Westfield UTC sometime next year. And we're hearing that more local outposts are planned.

Shake Shack is represented locally by Michael Burton of Urban Strategies Group.

The company has since updated its website with a statement that shares more details on the UTC location:

"The Shack's setting up shop at Westfield UTC, a three-level outdoor shopping center in University City. The Westfield UTC Shack, located on Level 2, will offer all the Shake Shack classics, from delicious 100% all-natural Angus beef burgers and cage-free chicken to crinkle-cut fries and spun-fresh frozen custard. Plus, there will be frozen custard concretes featuring local San Diego food purveyors. The Shack will be constructed with recycled and sustainable materials. Chairs and booths will be made from lumber certified by the Forest Stewardship Council, and tabletops will be made from reclaimed bowling alley lanes from Brooklyn's CounterEvolution. You stay classy, San Diego!"
