An excited tipster alerted us to the San Diego expansion of Beach Hut Deli, a popular California sandwich chain that was first founded in the Sacramento area over 35 years ago.
With over 30 locations in California, Nevada and Oregon, the surfer-themed Beach Hut Deli will land in the Residence Inn/SpringHill Suites by Marriott in the new Harbor Drive development on the former site of Lane Field. According to the San Diego Business Journal, the deli will share a 2,690-square-foot ground floor space with Ryan Bros. Coffee.
Beach Hut Deli's menu features over 30 cold and hot sandwiches — popular offerings include The Surfin Bird, layered with turkey, avocado, bacon and cream cheese, and The Spicolli, a hot sandwich with oven-roasted turkey breast on a French roll with cheddar cheese, ranch dressing, lettuce and hickory-smoked bacon. Each sandwich comes in small, medium and large sizes.
The downtown franchise will feature an outdoor patio and 15 flat-screens TVs; it will also have a full bar, pouring craft beer, wine and cocktails. This outpost is aiming to open in November, and a rep for Beach Hut Deli says they hope to plant many more locations in San Diego.
