Sea & Smoke quietly shuttered this past Sunday in Del Mar; owner and executive chef Matt Gordon made the announcement via his personal Facebook page, saying "Well.... Bittersweet day. We've seized an opportunity to sell sea & smoke. Thanks to this amazing team for a job well done! We are outta here!"
Gordon and his wife and partner, Young-Mi, opened the 4,500-square-foot Flower Hill Promenade eatery in Summer 2013; it was their third local restaurant and second project in North County. Urban Solace, which opened in North Park in 2007 and Solace and the Moonlight Lounge, which launched in Encinitas in 2011, remain in operation.
The Del Mar restaurant has reportedly been sold to new owners but Gordon could not share their identity or intentions for the space. Regarding the sale, he told Eater "We were contemplating/planning some alterations to the space and this opportunity came along...we decided it was the best move for us."
