After a landmark 64 years, the family who owned and operated Saska's Steak & Seafood on Mission Boulevard since 1951 has sold the iconic property to another local hospitality group.
The Patio Group's Gina Champion-Cain, who is at the helm of a fast-growing empire that includes The Patio restaurants in Pacific Beach and Mission Hills, The Front Porch stores, Swell Cafe and the in-construction Fireside by the Patio in Liberty Station, purchased the original Mission Beach restaurant and its adjacent sushi annex, Saska's Sushi. Champion-Cain is a longtime patron of the old school eatery that's known for its classic surf and turf menu, which ranges from shrimp scampi and crab legs to broiled steaks of all cuts and sizes.
Champion-Cain told the U-T she is planning to remodel the 2,500-square-foot steakhouse sometime next year and re-concept the 2,000-square-foot space that now houses the sushi bar. She shared with Eater that she'll first tackle the changes to the sushi area, saying that it will remain seafood-focused but may have a modern design and menu more akin to The Patio, with the existing fish market counter component emphasized as a resource for the community. As for the steakhouse space, Champion-Cain sentimentally said that she plans to "adhere to tradition"; thought there may eventually be some updates, the general menu will remain untouched and her facelift of the interior will be refresh rather than a redo.
